Traditionally, cante flamenco has been learned through immersion. From a young age, many singers grow up surrounded by the language, the rhythm and the culture.
Therefore, many will tell you: “You can’t study flamenco, you are either born with it or you’re not.
But I don’t believe this to be true.
What is true is that the experience is often very different for those discovering flamenco from the outside. You’re expected to listen, observe, imitate… and somehow understand what no one thinks to explain.
What is natural to many people from Andalusia, is something internationals need to learn from zero.
So, what if someone did explain it, so that outsiders can hope to understand it?
The rhythm, the language, the traditions, the unspoken rules: all of it.
I am a flamenco singer from the Netherlands, where I perform and teach.
I wasn’t born into flamenco and I didn’t grow up hearing cante at family gatherings. So, starting to learn flamenco singing was challenging for me.
Starting out, I asked every question you’re probably asking now. And the problem isn’t that flamenco is impossible to learn. But the thing is that many things are never explained.
So I created the tools I wish had existed when I started.
I’ve been a professional singer since the age of 12 but, I haven’t always sung flamenco. As a young girl I started with classical and jazz music education, which gave me the tools to later analyse and understand flamenco singing on a technical level.
