Flamenco is one of the most beautiful and complex art forms in the world, a music that carries centuries of history, emotion, and soul in every note. Yet for many, especially those who didn’t grow up surrounded by it, flamenco can feel distant or difficult to truly grasp.
The mission of Cantar Flamenco is to change that: to share the depth and potential of flamenco, and make it accessible to everyone, no matter where they come from. Cantar Flamenco helps foreigners and newcomers find their way into this rich tradition.
I’m a 27-year-old Dutch singer based in the dunes of the small village of Bakkum.
I’ve been singing almost my entire life, though I first trained as a classical and jazz singer. When I was eleven, I started writing songs. Even as a young girl, I was searching for music that moves you, music you feel deep inside. In other words: sad music.
For years, I never got much further than an A minor chord, until I started looking beyond my own horizon. After finishing high school, I set off traveling with a secret longing: to learn to play and sing the local music wherever I went. First there was salsa in Cuba, then mariachi in Mexico.
And then, suddenly, there was flamenco. From the very first moment I heard the music, everything else around me seemed to fade away, as if something inside me had always wanted to speak, and finally there was a way to give it voice.
Learning flamenco as an outsider turned out to be far from easy, with no clear path and no one to explain what felt so intuitive to those raised within it. I had to piece it together, slowly, over years, with a lot of help of different teachers. That struggle is exactly why I now want to share the things I wish someone had handed me back then, and make that path a little easier for others than it once was for me.
